| Semen Storage and Transport
Semen that is collected and processed for freezing at Satur Vet clinic is placed in pre-printed straws with your stallion’s name, Satur Veterinary Clinic and a batch number on each straw.
Frozen semen is stored in a specially designed canister, containing liquid nitrogen, which maintains the semen at –196 °C. At this temperature it can be stored for extended periods without any ill effect. However due to these precise storage requirements, transport is relatively expensive. Usually, more than one dose is shipped to cover multiple inseminations – often three.
If semen is to be transported for insemination at the clinic it is important that you organise frozen semen to arrive at our clinic well before the mare is due to be inseminated. It can then be safely stored in the canisters at our clinic, ready for use, rather than have a last-minute rush. Secure, long-term storage can be carried out at the Satur Veterinary Clinic site if you wish, in either one of our liquid nitrogen containers or your own. We can obtain good quality second hand tanks for you for between $650 and $1000.
